Inside the app

Built for the real interview

The AI officer grading answers during a practice civics interview, including the state-specific question about your state capital (Sacramento, California)

AI mock interview

Rehearse the real interview — out loud

At your naturalization interview, a USCIS officer asks the civics questions and you answer out loud. CitizenPrep’s virtual officer works the same way, so the real thing feels familiar.

  • Hands-free. The officer reads each question aloud and listens for your spoken answer.
  • Graded like an officer. Lenient on wording, strict on substance.
  • Ends like the real test. It stops as soon as you pass — or once passing is no longer possible.
  • Prefer typing? Type your answer at any time.

AI grading uses Google Gemini and needs an internet connection; offline, a simpler built-in answer check takes over. Your voice is turned into text by your phone’s speech recognition and is never stored by the app — see the privacy policy.

Always-current answers

Never study an out-of-date answer

Some civics answers change with elections and appointments. Apps that build them in go stale. CitizenPrep checks a live list every time you open it, so what you study matches today’s officeholders — no app update needed.

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Speaker of the House
  • Chief Justice
  • Your U.S. senators
  • Your governor
  • Your state capital
  • Your U.S. Representative

Your state, your answers. Pick your state once in Settings. Enter your ZIP code (optional) and the app shows your U.S. Representative — the lookup happens on your phone and your ZIP is never sent anywhere.

The civics test

2025 or 2008 civics test? It depends on when you filed

USCIS gives you the version of the civics test that matches the date your Form N‑400 was filed. CitizenPrep includes both versions — switch anytime in Settings.

Current test

2025 civics test

For Form N‑400 filed on or after October 20, 2025

  • 128questions to study
  • 20questions asked, at most
  • 12correct answers to pass
Earlier test

2008 civics test

For Form N‑400 filed before October 20, 2025

  • 100questions to study
  • 10questions asked, at most
  • 6correct answers to pass

65/20: if you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, you may study only the 20 questions USCIS marks for 65/20 applicants. Turn on 65/20 mode and the app’s interview, exams and flashcards use just those 20 (exams ask 10, and you need 6 correct). Always confirm the rules for your case on uscis.gov.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is CitizenPrep free?

Yes. Every question, practice exam, flashcard and the AI mock interview is free, with no sign-up and no subscription. The free version shows ads. One optional in-app purchase, CitizenPrep Pro ($4.99 one-time in the US), removes the ads.

Is CitizenPrep affiliated with USCIS?

No. CitizenPrep is an independent study tool made by ANAVASIS LLC. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to USCIS or any government agency. The civics questions and answers come from the official, public-domain USCIS study materials published on uscis.gov.

Which test do I take, the 2008 or the 2025 civics test?

It depends on when your Form N‑400 was filed. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 civics test: 128 questions to study, up to 20 asked, 12 correct answers to pass. If you filed before October 20, 2025, you take the 2008 test: 100 questions to study, up to 10 asked, 6 correct answers to pass. CitizenPrep includes both; switch in Settings. If you are unsure, check your USCIS notices or uscis.gov.

What is 65/20 mode?

If you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 20 years when you file, USCIS lets you study only the 20 civics questions marked for 65/20 applicants. Turn on 65/20 mode in Settings and the interview, practice exams and flashcards use just those 20 questions; practice exams ask 10 and you need 6 correct.

Does CitizenPrep work offline?

Mostly, yes. The questions, flashcards, practice exams, quizzes and your progress are on your phone and work without internet, and the app keeps the last list of current officeholders it downloaded. You need a connection to refresh that list, for AI grading in the mock interview (offline, a simpler built-in answer check is used) and for new “Learn more” explanations (ones you have opened before stay saved).

Does the AI mock interview really work by voice?

Yes. A virtual USCIS officer reads each question aloud and listens for your spoken answer, like the real oral test, using your phone’s microphone and speech recognition with your permission. You can type your answer at any time instead. Answers are graded by AI (Google Gemini), which needs an internet connection.

Which languages does the app support?

The app is available in English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog (Filipino) and Korean: menus, “Learn more” explanations and read-aloud. The civics questions and the mock interview stay in English, the language of the standard USCIS test.

How do the answers about current officials stay up to date?

Questions such as who the President, the Speaker of the House, your senators or your governor are now have answers that change after elections. CitizenPrep checks a live list each time you open it, so these answers update without an app update. Pick your state in Settings, and optionally enter your ZIP code to see your U.S. Representative; the ZIP lookup happens on your device.

I found a mistake. How do I report it?

Email anavasislimited@gmail.com with the question number and what looks wrong. We check every report.
